The Great British Lobby - The Telegraph
A technology group advised by David Blunkett, the former Home Secretary, is one of several British companies spending millions of pounds lobbying American politicians in a bid to shape legislation in the US.
UC Group, an online payment services group, has spent some $5.23m (£3.2m) on lobbying fees in recent years, one of several companies deploying millions to influence gambling legislation in the US.
Sportingbet, PartyGaming and Pokerstars have all hired high profile lobbying firms in the US to represent their interests as they prepare for the likely opening-up of the US online gaming market.
UC Group acts for 10 gaming companies, offering back-office and anti-money laundering operations and hopes to profit from any opening of the market. The group has worked to promote Senator Barney Frank's efforts to overturn the ban on online gaming.
The size of the company's lobbying expenses - which stretch to $2.31m since last September - are particularly eye-catching given it made just £3m in pre-tax profits last year.
Kobus Paulsen, UC Group's chief executive, suggested it was part of the group's long-term strategy. "We are certain that our efforts will yield an open market for non-US based gaming operators," he said.
Ruth Parasol and Russell De Leon, the PartyGaming founders, have spent up to £929,000 on lobbying fees since last September to influence online gaming legislation in the US.
It remains unclear whether any of those fees have been channelled towards lobbying over issues related to their potential prosecution for allegedly breaking US laws banning internet gambling.
Anurag Diskit, another founder, stunned the gaming industry in April this year by pleading guilty to breaking US laws and agreeing to pay a $300m fine. Ms Parasol, Mr De Leon and a third founder, Vikrant Bhargava, have yet to settle with the US Department of Justice.
Lobbying records for Sportingbet, the online gaming firm that also faces potential charges, show the company has paid $60,000 over the last year in relation to the "settlement of potential criminal charges related to online gambling". (Credit: The Telegraph)

Online gambling companies expect $1 Billion plus in online bingo
Numerous online gambling companies are expecting sales to increase as online bingo takes Europe by storm. Revenue from online bingo is expected to increase over 20 percent in the next couple of years.
Analysts predict the total is likely to be approximately $1.3 billion ending 2009, and by the end of 2010, $1.6 billion.
The online versions of the ever popular game, bingo, appear to be significantly more resilient than other forms of online gambling, as the most sever recession since World War II lingers on. Consumers have been restraining from spending too much money, so rather than going to traditional bingo halls, punters have been turning to their computers.
Online bingo is a relatively small compared to the veterans like online casinos and poker, however the sector is still poised for growth.
Some recent examples of the growth and excitement in the online bingo sector...
PartyGaming recently purchased Cashcade, with their flagship brand being the well know Foxy Bingo. Foxy Bingo joins Party's other strong bingo brand, PartyBingo.com.
Virgin Games bingo brand, Virgin Bingo, is running a promo where some lucky winners will win a trip to Richard Branson's Necker Island
Bingo Australia and their parent, The Bingo Affiliates, continue their dominance of the Google online bingo searches, especially in the Asia Pacific and Australian sector
Many charities and philanthropic groups in Australia are turning to bingo and online bingo promos to help raise funds for worthy causes.

Playtech’s Gross Income Grows by 23% in Second Quarter of 2009, by Tom Jenkins - Poker News Daily - 31st July 2009
In recent news released by Playtech, which operates the popular iPoker Network, it was revealed that the company’s Gross Income for the second quarter of 2009 rose by 23.3% year over year to €33.1 million. That figure was slightly below the €33.8 million recorded during the first quarter of 2009.
For the first half of the 2009 calendar year, Playtech recorded Gross Income of €66.9 million, up 29.8% from the €51.6 million recorded during the first half of 2008. A statement released by the company explains, “The Board is confident the Company will deliver strong growth for the full year to December 2009 compared to 2008. However, owing to the slower than anticipated start to WHO and the general challenging economic environment impacting some of our licensees, the Board believes that full year trading will be below current market expectations.” The acronym WHO refers to William Hill Online, which partnered with Playtech to open the 2009 calendar year.
Total Group Revenues for Playtech were €27.0 million, a jump of 0.4% compared to the second quarter of 2008 and a drop of 4.2% from the €28.2 million recorded during the first quarter of this year. Poker revenues rose by 17.8% year over year to €8.2 million; that figure represented a 6.4% drop in comparison to the €8.8 million recorded in the opening quarter of 2009.
Playtech derived 62% of its revenue from the European continent, down from the 72% that this region provided during the second quarter of last year. Contrastingly, its portion of revenue from Asia Pacific grew from 21% during the second quarter of 2008 to 32% during the recently completed quarter. A partnership with Betfair to provide casino and Bingo software to the independent site is expected to add increased revenue during the fourth quarter. In addition, Playtech will provide its full spectrum of products, including casino, poker, and mobile games, to NetPlay TV.
With regards to its Italian market, Playtech notes, “The Italian poker network is exceeding management’s expectations and is now Italy’s third largest poker network by revenues generated by the network licensees, while further positive progress in regulations will bring new opportunities in Italy from this strong base.” In the wake of new internet gambling laws in Italy, PokerStars recently transferred players from its dot-com site to PokerStars.it. Playtech has also forged a partnership with the iPoker Network site Chili Poker “in anticipation of the introduction of new regulations liberalizing the French market for online gaming.”
The company also spent the second quarter hard at work on a strategic partnership with the Serbian State Lottery. Playtech will provide casino and poker products in the Serbian language in its first agreement with a country’s lottery. New Serbian players will join the world’s third largest online poker network behind PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker. The iPoker Network is largest that does not accept players from the United States, boasting a seven-day running average of 5,500 real money ring game players. At its peak, expect to see over 10,000 poker hopefuls heading to the felts of the massive network to compete in cash games.
iPoker Network sites include BetFred, Boyle Poker, CD Poker, Expekt, Mansion Poker, Noble Poker, Paddy Power Poker, Poker Ocean, Titan Poker, and VC Poker. Playtech is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol “PTEC.” The stock closed trading on Friday at ₤291.75, down ₤11.00 on the day (3.63%). Last September, prior to the worldwide economic meltdown, Playtech’s stock had been trading as high as ₤528.
The company was founded in 1999 and forged its first deal, with Swiss Casino, two years later. The iPoker Network came to life in 2004, one year removed from Chris Moneymaker defeating poker pro Sammy Farha in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

PartyGaming's PartyCasino.com, Virgin Games, Microgaming, Playtech, Boss Media, Titan, Aspinalls and others in battle for entertainment dollar
The online gambling industry remains as competitive as ever, as the industry giants continue to ramp up budgets and campaigns, new companies start up, and other fall by the wayside.
Branded slot games featuring Hollywood themed, Marvel Entertainment super hero characters remain all the rage, as does cutting edge innovation, be it 3D casinos, live dealer options or enhancement in multi currency casino environments. Let us not forget the pending release of the THOR movie, now in production, not to mention IRON MAN II, with Mickey Rourke said to be playing a significant part. By the way, Rourke is said to be quite the poker player, and caught up with poker legend Doyle Brunson recently. Brunson is rumoured to have lost a few hundred thousand dollars in his recent WSOP quest, so maybe Brunson should get a branded slot game of his own up and running, to compliment his online casino efforts.
IGT (International Game Technology) continues to release some ultra impressive branded slot games, and many of these are finding their way into online casinos via the WagerWorks online arm of IGT. PartyGaming's PartyCasino.com and Virgin Games VirginCasino.com have been quick on the take up, and now other online casinos are getting in on the action.
In the past few years Microgaming released branded slots such as TOMB RAIDER and TOMB RAIDER: SECRET OF THE SWORD, and these have remained popular in a host of casinos including Captain Cooks Casino, JackpotCity.com, and Lucky Nugget Online Casino,
Playtech has enjoyed some strong successes in branded slots via their GLADIATOR, and something big is in the wings with THE UNTOUCHABLES, with more Hollywood branded slots rumoured to be on the way later this year.
TRANSFORMERS proved to be a hit with a number of online casinos and Virgin Games was most pro active with their promotion of the game.
PartyCasino.com is rumoured to be following up their branded slot offerings later this year with RESIDENT EVIL and THE NAKED GUN. Sources indicate that it will be a matter of time before an ANDRE THE GIANT online slot game hits the internet, and this has a connection to North Sydney's NextGen Gaming. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) current and former roster of Superstars and living legends are said to be open to branded online slot games, however this needs to be done in a way that meets regulations, as a considerable percentage of WWE fans are below gambling age.
Boss Media have embraced a global marketing and business strategy, by not only boosting their game portfolio, but also adding some impressive enhancements to their multi currency casino functionality. Boss Media and casinos running off the platform such as CasinoClub.com and SlotsClub.com are moving ahead in both the European and Asia Pacific markets. They are also well aware of Australia's reputation as having the most passionate and high spending gamblers in the word, be it fact of fiction.
Casino Kings or Casino Whales if you will, remain very popular terms in both traditional gambling and online gaming environments. Industry analysts believe that strong names such as Kerry Packer, James Packer, John Aspinall, Damian Aspinall and Richard Branson can be significantly leveraged into online casino and igaming campaigns. Virgin's Branson is already sometimes mentioned in Virgin Games press releases, and lately Damian Aspinall's names comes up more often in coverage of the online casino industry. Mr Aspinall is the owner of the Aspers chain in Europe and is said to have considerable ties to Australia's Packer Family, including Crown Casino king, James Packer. Aspers have recently been pushing its Aspinalls Online Poker and Aspinalls Online Casino brands, and they also enjoy ties to agency, Vegas Partner Lounge. Mr Aspinall is having a hard time living down his series of public outings with Australia's super model, Elle MacPherson aka "The Body". If any publicity is good publicity, Aspers top brass would know a thing or two about it, giving the casinos colourful history. Think George Freeman meets Kerry Packer, meets Richard Branson and The Google Guys all in one, and you get the picture. It seems fitting here to also mention THE GODFATHER and GOANNA GOLD slot games, both found at PartyCasino.com. Frank Sinatra also has a game in his honour, SINATRA. By the way, Sinatra was alleged to have links to organised crime, however it way never proven, therefor, not guilty. Makes for great yarns however.
Titan Casino and Titan Poker, not ones to sit and watch by the sidelines, are offering some tremendous sign up bonuses. Titan remains one of the most respected and trusted brands in the online gaming world, and trust and security is a topic that often comes up in the sector, so Titan wins some big points where it matters.
Media Man Australia and their igaming arm, Casino News Media, recently awarded the Online Casino of the Month to PartyCasino.com The Media Man Australia network enjoys dealings with dozens of igaming companies and brands, however their can only be one winner, so well done PartyGaming.
Punters are reminded to "Bet with your head, not over it", and if the gambling stops being fun, it's likely time to stop. Until next news report, stay safe and have fun.

Brazil busts US casino prostitute ring - Agence France-Presse - 2nd August 2009
Nine Brazilians and three US citizens have been arrested on charges of sending at least 200 Brazilian prostitutes to Las Vegas casinos, Dominican Republic resorts and to France.
The 12 suspects were arrested on Friday as part of a six-month international operation dubbed "Harem," the head of the federal police in Sao Paulo state, Leandro Daiello Coimbra, said.
US and Dominican Republic law enforcement officials and Interpol were involved in the bust.
The nine Brazilians and one of the US citizens were arrested in Brazil, in raids in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba. The other two Americans were arrested in the United States.
The gang, based in Sao Paulo, recruited Brazilian women, many of whom already worked as prostitutes, for work abroad as luxury sex workers, officers said.
The activity generated about $US8 million ($9.7 million) a month.
Ten bank accounts suspected of receiving the funds from the women, who earned about $US40,000 ($48,500) a month, were frozen.
The 12 suspects risk up to eight years in prison for organising prostitution, deriving earnings from prostitution, human trafficking and belonging to a criminal enterprise.
Another three suspects were being sought in the Dominican Republic and in France. (Credit: Agence France-Presse)
